Make an Impact – Become a School Governor

The Village Schools Federation is recruiting new governors to join its governing board from January 2021.

There are roles for general governors as well as those ring-fenced for parent governors. We are looking for people with a broad range of skills to support the growth and development of all of our schools, including:

  • Human resources. To ensure we recruit and retain the best leaders, staff and governors.
  • Communication and marketing. To communicate our vision to teachers, parents/carers and the wider community.
  • Estates and building management. To provide a safe and inspiring environment to learn and work.
  • Finance. To ensure resources are allocated to maximum effect for learning and growth.

Enthusiasm and a desire to make a difference to pupils are essential.

A structured programme of governor training and personal development will be provided to support you in your role.

Develop yourself – personally and professionally – while giving back to your community

What do governors do?

The governing board provides strategic leadership and accountability in schools:

  • The governing board is made up of around 12 governors and meetings take place every 6-12 weeks
  • Governors support and challenge the headteacher and make sure public money is well spent
  • Oversee the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
  • Hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils

Why apply for the role?

  • You don’t need to be a parent, teacher, or have experience of working in education – schools need a variety of skills to help them run efficiently
  • Use your own experience of education and life beyond school to inform conversations
  • Develop and utilise your skills in a board-level environment
  • Make a valuable contribution to education and your community
  • Support and challenge the school so that it improves for pupils and staff
  • Bring your unique experiences, perspectives and insights into decision-making in the interests of the school community
